Why BURS Matters.

At a time of tightening fiscal space, Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) has become central to Botswana’s economic stability. As mineral revenues decline, nearly 70% of government funding depends on BURS’ ability to collect revenue efficiently.

Through its Revenue Mobilisation Sprint to March 2026, BURS aims to help close a P20 billion funding gap while addressing a P2.2 billion revenue shortfall. Led by Acting Commissioner General Phodiso Valashia, the initiative prioritises immediate cash collection through recoverable debt, large taxpayers, and compliance enforcement, without introducing new taxes.

The strategy is execution-driven, focusing strictly on cash collected rather than processes. At the same time, BURS is reinforcing legal compliance and institutional discipline, ensuring enforcement remains fair, predictable, and grounded in law.

In a constrained economy, efficient revenue collection is critical. BURS’ ability to deliver in this period will directly influence liquidity, public service delivery, and overall economic confidence.
